An Art-Filled Christmas Eve

After literally running around like a maniac for the last three weeks or so, all of the Christmas preparations are finished (other than the meal tomorrow) and I could relax today and take time for myself and to just play ~ creating without a goal or a deadline.  It was heavenly!

Glue It Tuesday

This Glue it Tuesday page was fun to create.  I laid down a base of red acrylic paint mixed with gold glitter down through a stencil, then painted the spaces with green Twinkling H2O watercolor.  I glued down a magazine image then experimented with Heritage A-Line Markers, more Twinkling H2O's and Loew-Cornell pastels over the image.  Finally, I glued a gold poinsettia embellishment in her hair.  In the morning, I'll spray the page with fixative.  I always do that outside, due to the strong fumes.

Art Journal Pages

This page actually developed over several weeks.  Layers of stenciled acrylic paint under a cut out acrylic "smooth" painting I did at a Golden Acrylics class I took at MOCA last month.  I stamped over that element with black archival ink using Stampin' Up's dictionary stamp.  Then I glued down a magazine image and outlined the elements with a Sharpie paint pen.  The text consists of several layers of pens and paint as I struggled with my lettering ~ an area that needs a lot of work.  I aspire to improve my hand lettering in 2014 ~ inspired by architectural style alphas.  Practice, practice.

This page also took many weeks to evolve.  The background consists of pieces of card stock, some plain and some salvaged from junk mail, which I covered with layer upon layer of stenciled acrylic paint.  The sparrow is Viva Colour stone effect paste through a bird stencil.  The moons, disco ball and polka-dot circles are magazine cutouts.  The paper flowers were part of an old scrapbook kit.  The elements and page itself were outlined and detailed with Marvy Uchida duct tape pens (I LOVE those things).  Finally, the flowers were embellished with dollar bin rhinestones from Michael's.

My resolution for 2014 (among several ) is to create more art!

Merry Christmas!

Pondering my word for 2014

I am considering a new guiding word or phrase for 2014.  Last year's word was "light" but I didn't have a clear idea how to implement it into my daily life and be inspired by the word (the goal of having a "word" for the year).  Maybe "light" was too abstract a concept to shape my environment and behavior.  This year, I will select a more concrete action - which may end up being a didactic phrase.  Still thinking it over in the seven days left of 2013...

I finally got a vintage typewriter!  A Royal Futura 800 from Bungalow by the Beach. It just needs a new ribbon and some cleaning and we're off to the races (or the novel or the poem or the screenplay).  Next up, a 1902 Remington typewriter!

Christmas Selfie

Emma went with me to Stampin' Up Dinner Club tonight.  We had a great time having dinner with friends and making cards.  One of our group members, Barbara, knitted us all cowls for Christmas.  Emma and I received cobalt blue ones and we love them!  I took this "selfie" photo trying to capture a photograph of it. I was hostess of tonight's dinner club and brought ham & swiss sandwiches marinated in a homemade honey dijon sauce (made by my husband) with salad and Christmas cookies (made by Publix).  I over scheduled myself this week and had to postpone a jewelry showing to a potential bricks and mortar vendor for my jewelry until Saturday.  It is becoming apparent that "self-care" does indeed include managing my time better, especially with regard to my habit of thinking I can do everything at once.  I hope, in 2014, to curate my time, my body and my environment.  A worthy goal that will be beneficial to my entire family.  To slow down and live simply and authentically is the plan.  Wish me luck!

Art Journal ~ Shapes

I am playing around with shapes this morning as I work up the courage to write.  I am so grateful                             for my Instagram friends, who urge me on to ever braver expressions of my creativity.

My New Muse

I thrifted this beautiful mermaid figure on the way home from work today.  She is my new creative muse ~ and a role model for riding the waves of busyness and overwhelm with confidence and grace.
Finding her today was the end of my dream the night before, in which I dreamed I was a mermaid.  I interpret this dream to mean that I have not been spending enough time exploring my creativity recently ~ and I plan to dive back into that sea this long holiday weekend!  To read about the meaning of mermaids in dreams, click here:

Cozy Dogs

The dogs are staying warm and cozy on the couch on this chilly night. We are all staying at home tonight, out of the chilly wind on this Thanksgiving Eve.

Lazy Sunday

I spent the entire day actively procrastinating ~ busily doing many things, but none of the things I was supposed to be doing (including coloring my hair ~ so gray Monday it is) ~ I watched three movies on Netflix on my laptop while reorganizing my art supplies (no small task) and catching up on Project Life ~ and these pages were pretty uninspired, I must admit.  I didn't have one photo on either weeks' spread!

No more down time until next weekend, if then.  So I needed this lazy stay-at-home day.  Tonight, take-out pizza, Caesar salad and red wine.  Oh, and chocolate.

A Weekend of Art at MOCA ~ with SOMMA and Golden Acrylics

Contemporary Art Exhibit // Michael Goldberg

I had a great weekend at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) ~ a lecture and three classes taught by artist K.D. Tobin ~ Please check out his work here:

The weather was gorgeous all weekend and it was nice to walk around downtown in the sunshine.

The view from our 5th floor classroom.

Examples of the fun I had playing with interference and iridescent acrylic paint on black paper today. I am looking forward to working with these paints in the future in my art journals, ATC's and hopefully, fine art.

Thank you to the Society of Mixed Media Artists (SOMMA) for facilitating these wonderful classes. I am so excited to be the newest member of SOMMA!

Book Study ~ Thrashing About With God by Mandy Steward

Test driving new art supplies...

This is my first time using a quill dip pen and Daler-Rowney pearlescent acrylic ink.  (The face is a magazine image.)

Customer Appreciation Day at Reddi-Arts!

Today was Customer Appreciation Day at Reddi-Arts ~ there were several art supply vendors doing demonstrations and giving away free supplies (squee!) and lots of deep discounts on everything in the store.  I bought metallic acrylic paint (in gold, red and pearl white), acrylic ink, a large mixed-media journal, a set of Heritage A-Line Alcohol Markers and some gorgeous silver cloisonne' butterfly earrings.  There were also free fine art classes all day, but I didn't take any as I had other errands to run (Bath & Body Works and Chico's ~ ask me about my new blingy jeans).
My free SWAG haul from the art supply vendors.  Swoon.
Now, to play!
