Art & Soul | Fall 2015 Series | Women Writing for (a) Change Jacksonville

I have really enjoyed the Art & Soul series
facilitated by the very talented Jennifer Wolfe

Today we celebrated the end of another
semester (my third) with a public reading
and display of art at

The following collages and poems were created
by me during the Fall 2015 semester.

Following
the wrong god home,
we may miss
our star.

Pursuing
the illusion
of constant productivity,
we miss
the full depth
of our lives.

We congratulate
ourselves
on amassing possessions;
the clutter stacked up
like a fortress
behind which we hunker down
to fend off the unknown.

Our energies
are spent
on the care
and maintenance
of an idolatous ego;
clinging to
a self-proclaimed role;
the strong one,
the reliable one,
the one who could
be counted upon
but for her inattention.

We must stop
wasting time
and energy
on bridging
the irreconcilable
dichotomy
of who we think we are
and who we really are.

We must re-center
our inner compasses.

I arrive at this time,
needing to exercise
my voice
and hear
what it has to say.

Have I been asleep
and dreaming,
my voice silenced
by the dull,
repetitive slumber
of routine
and habit?

Silent no longer,
I must embrace
the inner wisdom
that spills out,
both flooding
and lifting up
my consciousness
and experience.

Real living
is both joyous
and devastating,
beautiful
and constantly
in decay.

To shore myself
up against
even the worst of it,
is to deny
my humanity;

The richest gift
that this unholy ghost
has been given
by the universe.

I’m drawn intuitively
to circles
and spirals
and the non-linear,
as a child to the womb.

The sharp, straight
lines of
our short dash
from birth to death
are but the streaking
tail of a comet,

circling back
in its ancient orbit
to pass this way
again
and again.

Commonplace Book | Visual Diary Update

We are spiritual beings having an earthly experience.

If we are quiet and focused, we can transcend our bodies
and access limitless wisdom.

The challenge is finding quiet in the chaos.

The gathering of wisdom and information is
one way of meditating in the absence of peaceful solitude.

In the noisy world we inhabit, sometimes it is enough to collect and absorb
information in order to synthesize our way to clarity and truth.

Quilt Studio!

Now that I'm a partial empty-nester, I've expanded by art studio
into newly-flown bird's bedroom for use as a quilt studio!

My first project is a baby crib quilt for said birdie's baby.
We'll find out in three weeks if it's a boy or a girl.
Either way, this will be a much-loved grandchild!

I found these two cubbies at various thrift shops in the last couple of weeks for $2 each!

The move-in was fun and relaxing, with this beautifully serene pink
paint on the walls, courtesy of the hubs, who painted the room for me to maximize
the natural light from the southern exposure window.

I've got two Arrow Gidget II sewing tables, one with a Singer Sonata
sewing machine I received as a high school graduation present in 1983
and a Bernina 1230 I received as a gift from my mother-in-law.

The Singer is my quilt top piecing workhorse and the Bernina is my quilter.

Here's the luminously clear pink I selected for the walls.

This quilt studio is a happy space!
